The Hands-On Optics program at the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO) has developed a competition called Hit the Target. This competition has been used in a variety of settings ranging from a middle school science fair to a statewide competition. Students must learn how light reflects off of mirrors and accurately measure angles to get the laser beam to hit a designated target. It has been used with students from 4th grade through high school around Tucson. We will outline the development of the competition and how it has been used in different settings. Hands-On Optics funded by the National Science Foundation and is a joint partnership with the National Optical Astronomy Observatory, the International Society of Optical Engineering, and the Optical Society of America.
