A Lagrangian transformation is used here to investigate the nonlinear evolution of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability in magnetic fluids. It is shown that the formation of bubbles on the interface can be inhibited by using magnetic fluids of higher permeabilities or increasing the strength of the applied magnetic field. The model developed here explains qualitatively the experimental observation by Rosenzweig that a magnetic field applied tangentially to the interface exerts a stabilizing influence on a ferrofluid configuration.
