The understanding of the ablation of the outer layer of an ICF capsule is an important problem for ignition. Joined experiments were performed in 1995/1996 to investigate ablation physics of brominated plastic foils (CH_1-xBr_x, x=0.054) using Nova Laser Facility with two kinds of laser pulses (1ns duration square pulse and 2.5ns shaped pulse). X-ray driven ablation of a planar foil induces a shock which accelerates the non-ablated matter. The efficiency of the ablation has been characterized by measuring the shock breakout timing, the radiative burnthrough timing and the foil velocity in order to relate the radiative wave velocity and the shock velocity to the incident drive. Numerical simulations compared to experimental data show a good agreement. Sensitivity of the results to the drive temperature or the opacity of the CHBr have been investigated.
