A theoretical model is developed to explain the observed features of double radio sources. The emission is produced via the synchrotron mechanism by relativistic particles moving between the two shells of the dipole magnetic field produced by an optical galaxy, as proposed by Andreasian (1983). This model is used to calculate the radio brightness distribution at various frequencies in the steady-state case, and the results are presented graphically. Features explained include the double structure and its disposition, the dependence of a component size on frequency, the field orientation on the major axis, the low-frequency radio halo, and the similarity between the fine structures of extended and compact sources.
