Techniques for selecting the interval within which the E0 root of the Kepler equation of satellite motion is to be sought are examined analytically. The equation for elliptical motion is rewritten; a geometrical interpretation is given; and two general linear methods for selecting the E0 interval are derived and illustrated using graphs. An analogous method for a Kepler-like equation of hyperbolic motion is also given.
