Two independent methods to derive the lower limits to the mass of a compact star in a cataclysmic system are introduced. If the superhumps in cataclysmic variables and in X-ray novae are of a common origin, the same methods can also be used in the case of X-ray sources. The methods are used to estimate the masses of the compact components in GS 2000 + 25 and GS 1124 - 68 at larger than 3.5 solar masses.
