We have used XMM-Newton to survey the X-ray spectral properties of BL Lacertae objects. Thirteen objects, selected from the Einstein Slew Survey, were observed in relatively short exposures. These short exposures were intended to enable us to both survey the properties of the class as well as pinpoint for deeper study objects with features such as excess absorption and/or emission lines. The spectra of all but two objects are well represented by either a power law with variable absorption, or a logarithmic parabola with fixed (Galactic) absorption. Because objects with repeated observations would require a variable absorbing column, we favor a continuous X-ray spectral curvature. Two objects require both spectral curvature and a small column in excess of Galactic. Surprisingly, we found no examples of "warm absorber" features, contrary to our expectations based on the ASCA and BBXRT observations of the X-ray brightest BL Lacs, PKS2155-304, PKS 0548-322. Such features must be rare, rather than common or ubiquitous as previous studies had speculated. We examine implications for the circumnuclear environments, jets and central engines of BL Lacs
