A new class of quadrant avalanche photodiodes (QAPDs) is characterized with a focus on the improved RCA version, which is divided on the junction side opposite to the light entry side. The evaluation methods are discussed. The new QAPD uses a single photodetector to communicate and track; while performing the communication function, it is simultaneously used to provide tracking error signals. In order to be independent of data format, tone tracking is done with a small percentage of audio amplitude modulation on the laser source. The evaluation is performed on two prototypes with dividers (a gold-coated etched silicon reflective mirror and a total-internal-reflection divider made from refractive material) and one prototype without a divider. The results on communication and tracking performance are illustrated by curves. The possible improvements are discussed.
