Magnetic field measurements acquired at low altitude with the ISIS 2 and TRIAD spacecraft confirm the close connection between the orientation and amplitude of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) and the spatial location, flow direction, and amplitude of Birkeland currents in the high latitude dayside region usually referred to as the cusp. These relationships demonstrate that the Birkeland currents are an important element in the electric circuit responsible for the close connection of surface magnetic disturbances in the polar regions with the orientation of the IMF. These same relationships support previous suggestions for magnetic merging in regions of anti-parallel IMF and geomagnetic field lines on the dayside boundary of the magnetosphere.
