The technique of speckle interferometry as applied to close binary stars is described. Observations made with this technique are discussed for a number of close visual binaries, spectroscopic, astrometric, and eclipsing binaries, as well as stars for which duplicity is suggested by variable radial velocity, a composite spectrum, or excess luminosity. These include 12 Persei, 46 and 51 Tauri, Eta Orionis, Eta and Theta Virginis, 17 Cephei A, 19 Leonis, Capella, Algol, Chi Draconis, and Epsilon Hydrae. It is noted that great care in calibration can push speckle measurements significantly beyond the approximately 0.01-arcsec accuracy obtainable by conventional techniques and that perturbations in stellar orbital motions produced by otherwise invisible objects of planetary mass might be detectable if such accuracy is achieved.
