We request a single, one-hour integration of the M 13 Hydra field observed in the 1998A semester for the purpose of identifying radial velocity variables to look for binaries. The 36 stars included in the sample are giants in the magnitude range 16< V< 17, just preceding and during the first dredge-up event. The original program was to investigate the dispersion in the sodium abundance (as a surrogate for oxygen) before the first dredge-up, but the observations also provide a good sample for detecting binaries. A larger time-baseline is needed and the proposed follow-up observation will provide that.
