The aim of this paper is to review the history of the Spacelab programme from the point of view of the European space science community. In the first part the author briefly describes the main features of the Spacelab system and the early reactions of scientists to the appeal of a scientific laboratory in space. In the next part, he analyses the role of potential Spacelab missions in the planning of ESA's scientific programme for the 1980s. The third part is devoted to the European instrumentation on the first Spacelab mission, jointly realised by ESA and NASA in the framework of the Spacelab development programme. Finally the author briefly discusses ESA plans for Spacelab utilisation after the first mission.
