Pitch angle distributions of 35 - 1000 keV protons in the 18 February 1979 interplanetary shock event are presented and discussed in the paper. The observed, apparently unusual distributions can be well explained by assuming a magnetic bottle configuration of the interplanetary magnetic field immediately prior to the shock passage. The implication of such a magnetic configuration on the acceleration of charged particles by shock waves is also discussed.
