Significant magnetic field and plasma perturbations in the solar wind were observed during the Phobos-2 elliptical orbits around Mars at the Phobos orbit crossings (Phobos events). As a remarkable feature, the perturbations were detected in all cases on the upstream side of the Phobos orbit. The authors present a simple theory of solar wind-dust interaction on the basis of a Hall-MHD plasma model, and suggest the Phobos events to be the signatures of phase-standing waves excited in the solar wind upstream of a thin charged dust torus along the Phobos orbit.
