The Kerr parameter a* of the black hole (BH) in M33 X-7 has recently been measured to be a* = 0.77+/-0.05 [9]. It has been proposed that the spin of the 15.65Msolar BH is natal. We show that this is not a viable evolutionary path since the explosion that would produce a BH with the cited a* and a 3.45 days orbital period would disrupt the binary. We show that the system must have evolved through the hypercritical mass transfer of ~5Msolar from the secondary star to the BH.
