The physics questions that can be addressed through beta decays of exotic nuclei are reviewed. They cover fundamental tests, nuclear astrophysics, nuclear spectroscopy, nuclear halo states and in particular beta-delayed particle emission processes. The basic theory is reviewed briefly and trends in the current experimental activities mentioned.
