Using the program code CORSIKA the author simulated p-, O- and Fe-induced extensive air showers in the energy range E0 ≍ 1015eV. Considering the steeply falling primary energy spectrum and the limited resolution of the KASCADE detector the energy of the shower can be determined with an accuracy of about 30% (p-showers) and 20% (O-, Fe-showers), respectively. Assuming a relative composition of p:O:Fe = 6:1:1.75 the iron part of the cosmic rays can be separated using the electron and muon number with a signal to background ratio of S/B = 3.5±0.4. The iron showers are recognized correctly with nearly 90% efficiency.
