A statistical study of polar cap arc behavior has been conducted using data obtained at the Dumont d'Urville station during solar cycle 21. The arc characteristics are described, including diurnal and seasonal occurrence variations, lifetime, color and brightness, magnetic/solar conditions of appearance, relation to the IMF, and orientation with respect to the sun direction. Changes of the mean orientation with arc brightness and magnetic activity are observed. The observations permit the identification of type 1 arcs (sun-aligned) and type 2 arcs (from the auroral oval) as defined by Ismail and Meng (1982). The role of the sign of the IMF components Bx and By is pointed out.
