Observations of VHF scintillations obtained from three antennas in Hiraiso, Japan during June-July 1982 are analyzed. The position of the two crossed-Yagi antennas and the helical antenna, and the direction of the 136.112 MHz radio path from the geostationary satellite are described. The total electron content, scintillation signal level, drift velocity, and diffraction pattern ellipses for the scintillation events of July 5-6 and July 21-22, 1982 are examined. Correlation analysis is used to evaluate steady drift velocity and direction, and the shapes and sizes of ionospheric irregularities. The azimuthal distribution of drift velocity, the major axis directions, and axial ratios of the ellipses are studied. It is observed that during the premidnight hours the drift was southward and southwestward, and during the postmidnight hours a northward drift was detected; drift reversals from northward to southward occurred in the areas of strong and high-pitch scintillations. The axes of ellipses correlate with geomagnetic field lines. The dependences of the axial ratio and minor radius on the S4 index is investigated; the axial ratio increases and the minor radius decreases with increasing S4.
