A statistical spectral analysis shows that both H-alpha emission at 656.3 nm and the 630-nm emission experience fluctuations with periods of 53-60 and 20-27 min; the 630-nm fluctuations are in antiphase with the H-alpha fluctuations, and lag with respect to the latter. Results indicate that irregular fluctuations of the H-alpha and 630-nm emissions in the nightglow of the upper atmosphere may be an indicator of ring-current decay during magnetic storms with a sudden commencement.
