It is shown that relative variations of the electron density at the E-layer maximum on solar zenith angle chi for large values of chi can be explained if variations of the Chapman function with the height of the maximum are taken into account. Expressions for the relative variations are obtained which can be used to predict critical frequencies for chi = 75-90 deg.
