The relationship among cold and warm ion beams, the density gradient drift, and the broadband electrostatic noise (BEN) on the outer edge of the plasma sheet boundary layer was investigated using a model of plasma. The linear and second-order theories were used to demonstrate that ion beams and density gradient drift can generate BEN, and it is shown that the effects of these ion beam- and density-gradient-drift-driven instabilities affect the surrounding plasma temperature. The numerical solutions of the linear dispersion equation are presented.
