A new explanation for the phenomenon of bead lightning is proposed. Under special conditions the pinch effect generates radial modulation periodically along the lightning column. The radial modulation causes the lightning column to deform into a "string of sausages." The strongly pinched regions are visually very bright; the weakly pinched regions appear dark in comparison.
