It is shown that the linear theory of density waves in flat disk galaxies can describe, together with the usual tightly wound waves of Lin and Shu, a bar-like feature which always comes with the waves and dominates in the forbidden band around corotation where they are evanescent. This result is obtained analytically and confirmed by direct numerical integration of the relevant equations. The relevance of this feature to barred galaxies and to waves driven by external forcing is reviewed.
