Balloon measurements of the magnetic field in the northern auroral zone are presented. The vertical component observed during the SAMBO-79 balloon campaign is compared with the ground observations of the 4 Mar., 1979 substorm. The horizontal and vertical components observed during the BOA-Viking balloon campaign for the 26 July 1986 substorm are shown. Expected signatures at balloon altitudes are discussed for horizontal line or sheet currents, and transverse Alfven waves.
