Results are reported from polar stratospheric cloud (PSC) profiles obtained near the center of the 1990 winter vortex at the South Pole using the balloon-borne 490/940-nm backscatter instrument described by Rosen and Kjome (1990) and the frost-point sensor described by Rosen et al. (1988). The data are presented in graphs and discussed in detail. PSC formation is observed and attributed to the condensation of water vapor, which had minimum concentrations near the saturation value for the minimum temperatures measured and recovered only slowly during spring warming. PSC backscatter decreased significantly above about 14 km in the region where ozone depletion was detected later in the year; a loss of particles by sedimentation, resulting in dehydration and denitrification, is inferred.
