An analysis of the ionization balance of proton hydrates in the D-region indicates that their source is basically associated with the clustering chain of O2(+) ions. A necessary additional sink for the proton hydrates is shown to be connected with an 'aerosol' layer. Precipitating particles are found to make an important contribution to the ionization balance of the D-region at high latitudes.
