Using HF sweep-frequency backscatter, two curtains of intense field-aligned irregularities have been observed at high latitudes. To obtain these data, the observing station had to be located at a suitable geomagnetic latitude which depends on the inclination of the geomagnetic field and the height of the F-layer. Two backscatter stations at different latitudes have been used. The geomagnetic latitude of the two curtains varies as a function of geomagnetic time and geomagnetic activity. One curtain appears at the southern edge of the auroral oval between 68 and 78 deg invariant geomagnetic latitude. It is observed at all local times and has a minimum latitude of occurrence at midnight. A second curtain is seen only at night. It appears north of the midlatitude F-layer trough between 58 and 70 deg invariant geomagnetic latitude. It moves equatorward till sunrise. Its relation to the plasmapause is discussed.
