This paper discusses the merits of employing the escape gating technique in proportional counters used above the earths atmosphere for X-ray astronomy. We show that besides the improved energy resolution, the superior background rejection of this technique will allow the design of a highly sensitive instrument. Our considerations are supported by laboratory measurements using a one atmosphere multiwire proportional counter and a hybrid detector made of a scintillator phoswich and a proportional counter. The results are also modelled by Monte Carlo calculations. Emphasis is given to the form and nature of the residual background in an escape gated instrument which we find is a factor 15 lower than in the same instrument without escape gating. This may more than compensate for the loss of efficiency inherent in escape gating.
