Data of meridional scanning photometers are used to investigate the intensity distribution of diffuse background glow (BG) near the equatorial boundary of the auroral oval in the evening during the preliminary phase of a substorm. It is shown that the BG inside the oval is significantly fainter than on the equatorial side of the oval. A relationship between the intensity of the diffuse BG and radio-aurora amplitude is established.
