It is demonstrated that recent positive B(z) observations of currents, convective electric fields, and visual auroral forms fit into consistent patterns that are ordered principally by the B(y) component of the IMF. The combination of single and double cell convective flow patterns that, it has been suggested, occur at polar cap latitudes during periods of positive B(z) is discussed. It is argued that within a two-cell configuration, one of the cells can at times dominate over the other cell in a manner dependent upon the polarity and magnitude of B(y), giving the appearance of a single cell. During periods of weak B(y) the two cells are equal and symmetric about the noon-midnight meridian with sunward convective flow over the pole.
