A detailed analysis of auroral arcs 5-10 minutes before the explosive substorm phase is carried out on the basis of Iakutiia data for February-March 1969 and 1976. An effect is disclosed which precedes the first manifestation of the main features characterizing the explosive substorm phase by 5-10 minutes, including the first Pi2 pulsation train. A brightening wave front with an asymmetric meridional profile of surface brightness is observed to travel along the low-brightness uniform filamentary zone; the displacement is toward the west in the evening sector and toward the east in the morning sector.
