Structures (either gaseous or stellar) of considerable mass and axially symmetric to the first approximation are observed in many galactic nuclei. In my contribution I will discuss two different aspects of their presence: (i) their perturbing gravitational potential may influence motion of stars in a characteristic way, with possible observational consequences; (ii) due to their deduced stability they can serve as probes of the external gravitational field.
