We re-examine the energy-loss rate from the possible axion emission during the supernova SN1987A collapse, paying particular attention to the modification of the emission rate due to the process NN-->NNa by the nuclear medium. The main corrections are ϱ-meson exchange, many-body effects and nucleon effective mass. All of these decrease the previous lower bound for fa substantially and lead to a new lower bound fa>=(0.75-5) × 1010 GeV.
