Many new experimental and theoretical results on the source region of whistler-mode chorus have been recently obtained using measurements of the Cluster and Double star spacecraft. Chorus appears as a highly variable emission in the entire data set. We present an empirical model of properties of chorus emissions developed using a database of systematic measurements of whistler-mode chorus by the four Cluster spacecraft and the Double Star TC-1 spacecraft. A range of wave frequencies around one half of the equatorial electron cyclotron frequency is investigated and possible resonant energies of wave-particle interactions are analyzed. The chorus intensity and its polarization and propagation properties are organized as a function of frequency, position and level of geomagnetic activity. Analysis of these large volumes of data clearly shows that the source region of whistler-mode chorus is located within a few thousands of km from the geomagnetic equatorial plane. The region of observed maximum intensities seems to be extended toward higher geocentric distances of about 8 Earth radii during low and moderate geomagnetic activity. Intense chorus cases have been found for different levels of the geomagnetic activity from moderate to high. These results are useful for theoretical modeling of chorus properties and its interactions with the Van Allen radiation belts.
