Automation and robotics technology needs and the operational aspects applicable for planetary sample acquisition in general are discussed. In particular concepts for hybrid automation are highlighted. Special features of typical sampling tools, using the Rosetta mission as an example, are discussed and a control architecture in which this hybrid automation solution can be coordinatedly operated together with its hosting lander/rover vehicle is proposed.
