The paper assesses the feasibility of using the method of natural orthogonal components to identify interdiurnal S(R) variations required for calculating K-indices at magnetic observatories from digital geomagnetic data. The proposed automated procedure can be used to implement large-volume computations with the aim of obtaining uniform time series of K-indices at various observatories, even those not having digital recording systems.
