The significance of the three international polar years (1882/83, 1932/33, and 1957/58) extends beyond pure scientific research. In addition, international cooperation has been furthered so that there are now more than 100 nations involved, along with tens of satellites and oceanic research vessels. Particular attention is given to the pioneering work done by Karl Weyprecht, who made expeditions to the region around Novaya Zemlya (1871 and 1872/74) and proposed the first international polar year. The growth of international cooperation during the three polar years is traced.
