Hot Flow Anomalies (HFAs) are high-temperature deflected solar wind flows resulting from interactions between the bow shock and tangential discontinuities. Using previously compiled lists of HFA events, we systematically investigated the auroral responses and ground based disturbances following the occurrence of a HFA between the years 1996 and 2007 inclusive. Global auroral images from Polar UVI and IMAGE FUV are used to determine the presence of auroral responses and, when they exist, to track their motion and evolution. They are subsequently compared with concurrent ionospheric current systems whose motions are traced by ground based magnetometers. We have found that not all HFA events have associated auroral emissions. In the events where corresponding auroral responses to the HFAs exist, many of the emissions are either slow-moving in comparison with the propagation velocity of the magnetic disturbances or stationary. These results imply that there is a decoupling between the ionospheric currents and auroral emissions.
