Scientific paper

This paper presents a comprehensive set of ground and satellite data documenting the optical, particle, and ion drift characteristics of a typical sequence of dayside auroral expansions into the polar cap. Observations are presented which illustrate the prenoon and postnoon occurrence of the auroral phenomenon during negative and positive IMF B(Y), respectively. Cleft auroral observations and the event sequence observed at mantle latitudes are discussed, emphasizing the relationship with the IMF observations and observations of solar wind dynamic pressure during one of the auroral sequences. It is concluded that pulsed magnetopause merging is a probably source mechanism for the event sequence under examination and that these events may at times contribute a nonnegligible fraction of the total transpolar voltage.
