The high-altitude region some 1000-10,000 km above the auroral oval is known to host various plasma energization processes that accelerate and heat both cold (ionospheric) and hot (magnetospheric) plasma. During the past 15 years a number of satellites have visited this interesting region in space - the auroral acceleration region - and carried out detailed measurements of the properties of plasma energization. Some of the major discoveries in the auroral acceleration region are highlighted and the physical processes believed to be responsible for the energization of particles there are discussed. Of particular importance have been the recent findings from Viking and Dynamics Explorer on the characteristics of the field-aligned acceleration of electrons and the combined transverse and field-aligned acceleration of ions.
