The low solar activity following the minimum in 2007 led to long-term quieting also in the magnetosphere - ionosphere system. The IMAGE magnetometer chain records magnetic disturbances covering latitudes from 60 to 80 degrees latitude, or from subauroral to polar cap latitudes. The long and homogeneous time series allows us to examine the electrojet location and intensity at local dusk, midnight, and dawn sectors without bias caused by station location away from the electrojet latitude. We compare the electrojet location and intensity during the minimum in 2007-2009 to the previous minimum in 1996. The analysis shows that most of the changes can be associated with the weaker solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field driving, but that there are distinct signatures in substorm occurrence frequency and size: During 2007-2009, the substorms were more numerous but smaller in size than during the previous minimum under similar driving conditions. This shows that while the driven component in the ionosphere is similar in 2007-2009 than during the previous minimum, the magnetotail processes were qualitatively different thus changing the magnetosphere - ionosphere coupling and the ionospheric substorm signatures.
