The results of the ground based-satellite study for the case on 23 Jan 1979 are discussed. It is shown that at the end of the substorm growth phase, when the tailward stretching of the magnetic field at 6.6 Re is ceased, the movement of the high energy electron precipitation band is stopped. For the intensive substorm the brightening of aurora at the expansion phase starts inside the electron precipitation band and the weak substorm starts northward of the band. The northward expansion of the auroral bulge is connected with the magnitude of the dipolization at 6.6 Re.
