The paper presents an investigation of intensity variations of auroral arcs and the background (at points 100-150 km to the north and south of the arc) at the preliminary phase of an auroral substorm and at breakup commencement. The statistical characteristics of aurora damping are determinned. It is shown that, 4-6 min before breakup commencement, the brightness falls by 20-25 percent in the arc as well as in the background glow.
