Using global auroral images obtained by the Polar UVI and IMAGE FUV experiments, we investigate the global auroral energy flux and the dynamics of the polar cap during three types of enhanced magnetospheric activity: isolated substorms, global sawtooth oscillations, and steady magnetospheric convection intervals. The polar cap area is a proxy for the magnetic flux contained in the tail lobe. Isolated substorms, for example, show a gradual increase in polar cap area during the growth phase and a rapid decrease in polar cap area during the expansion phase. We identify steady magnetospheric convection intervals as periods of enhanced activity in which the polar cap area remains quasi-constant. We interpret this as the condition in which the dayside and night side reconnection rates are balanced. We apply a similar investing now to the dynamics of the auroral flux and polar cap area during periods of global sawtooth oscillations. We compare and contrast the results for isolated substorms, SMC intervals and periods of sawtooth oscillations.
