Meteor Trails: Sodium, Meteor Trails: Earth Atmosphere
Scientific paper
Sodium contained in a meteor body and pulverized in the body's disruption can be a cause of the longevity of the afterglow of a meteor train. The glow can be a result of interaction between sodium atoms and atmospheric nitrogen molecules excited to high oscillatory levels. The latter are formed in abundance in the path of the meteor. As an evaluation shows, this mechanism is able to maintain a glow of brightness +(2 - 3)m for ten seconds for a meteor brightness of zero stellar magnitude.
