Results are presented for a detailed analysis of experimental data on the Ly-alpha airglow of the upper atmosphere, which were obtained with the 'Vertical space probe' spacecraft. The theory of transfer of solar Ly-alpha quanta in a three-dimensional medium is used in the analysis, and total frequency redistribution of the quanta is assumed. It is shown that the best agreement with the data is achieved in the framework of a spherically asymmetric model of the geocorona with a neutral-hydrogen density of 30 million per cu cm and an exospheric temperature of 1050 K in the terminator region. The variation of neutral-hydrogen density in the terminator region above the critical level of 500 km is found to satisfy Chamberlain's (1963) model with a satellite-particle radius of 2.5, but to agree with the Kockarts-Nicolet (1963) model below the base of the exosphere.
