The study with high angular resolution of the circumnuclear atomic and molecular gas has given new insights in the physics involved in the collimation and fuelling of the nuclear activity in AGN and Starburst galaxies. We present MERLIN and MERLIN+EVN observations with a resolution of 50-150 mas (linear resolution 30-100 pc) of the radio continuum and the HI absorption and the OH megamaser emission or OH absorption of 4 starburst/AGN galaxies. In all cases, the radio continuum arises in a disc-like structure, thought to be synchrotron emission from electrons accelerated by supernovae, elongated along the major axis of the optical image. This continuum provides an ideal background for the HI absorption which along with the 1667 OH megamaser emission arise in rotating structures with diameters of a few tens to a few hundred parsecs. The OH emittion region has on average smaller size than the HI absorbing region. Our high resolution interferometric CO observation of one of these objects (IC 694) show also an inner rotating-disk structure elongated at the same orientation as but with a larger diameter thanthe HI and the OH disks. These observations enable us to constrain the dynamics of these objects on <500 pc scales and study the physical conditions of the circumnuclear atomic and molecular gas.
