Data for the atmospheric turbidity over Africa during 1981 and 1982 are presented based on measurements obtained using a sunphotometer installed in the Central Sahara desert. It is shown that the atmospheric optical depth increased by approximately 0.1 units over the Sahara desert during 1982. This increase in the atmospheric optical depth is attributed to the volcanic eruption of El Chichon, Mexico, because of the timing and the geographical location of the observation station. This increase is about 1/3 of the values observed closer to the source which indicates a spread and dilution of the volcanic clouds
