Observations of the quantal emissions from the upper atmosphere are reviewed. Consideration is given to aurora and airglow measurements in three wavelength regions from the X-ray to the extreme and far UV (greater than 2000 A); the near UV and visible regions (2000-7000 A); and the infrared (less than 7000 A). The applications of the observations to current theoretical models of dayglow and nightglow processes is discussed.
